Escondido Charter High School’s Traditional Classroom Program’s Graduation

The sixteenth annual commencement ceremony for the Traditional Classroom Program (TCP) at Escondido Charter High School took place on Friday, June 2, on the White Tiger Field. One hundred and one students earned their diplomas that evening.

Executive Director Shawn Roner conducted the ceremony along with Assistant Director Marc Gilbertson, teacher Jonathan Takagi, and President and Founder of the American Heritage Charter Schools Dennis “Coach” Snyder. Also assisting with the ceremony were Assistant Director Erin Dunlap and members of the ECHS Board of Directors.

Valedictorian Ellie Marlor spoke to the class about their journey together and the unique experience “Charter” provides. She plans to attend Duke in the fall where she will major in Chemistry and Global Health. Salutatorian Matthew Coe, a thirteen year student of American Heritage Charter Schools—having attended from kindergarten through 12th grade—, also addressed the class. He shared the intense, competitive nature of the Senior class and shared that he was very proud that they were caring and compassionate at the same time. Coe will attend Gettysburg College in the fall and will major in Chemistry.

The Class of 2017 reached new levels of achievement in several areas. The class members earned scholarships totaling approximately $1.6 million, resulting in a class average of nearly $16,000 worth of scholarships per student. Ninety-six percent of this class will attend college after graduation and three members plan to serve in the Armed Forces, including Quirra Barros who will attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School. In addition to academics, the class of 2017 demonstrated a remarkable dedication to their community, serving on average 118 hours of community service per student for a combined total of more than 12,000 hours for the class.
